Nassau, 27 September 2024 – The Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board (NPIPB) today announced two recipients of the first-ever Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board Scholarships in partnership with The Lyford Cay Foundations. Earlier this year, the promotion board pledged $250,000 over 5 years to the Lyford Cay Foundations to help young Bahamians receive education and professional development in the tourism and hospitality industry, and the applicants were chosen based on their passion for the tourism industry, showcased through their hard work and promising futures.
The recipients of the Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board Award include:
- Quinn Brown, Master of Arts in Qualitative Management in Business Administration - Specialization in Artificial Intelligence, University of Fredericton, Canada
- Mia Moss, Bachelor of Science in Baking & Pastry Arts, Johnson & Wales University’s Providence Campus, USA
Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board CEO Joy Jibrilu said, “We are thrilled to award the Nassau & Paradise Island Promotion Board award to these outstanding scholars. Each recipient has showcased admirable dedication to their studies, and we are honoured to present them with a scholarship in partnership with The Lyford Cay Foundations to support their schooling and build their knowledge of the hospitality and tourism sector. It is only fitting that on World Tourism Day we make these announcements as these recipients are symbolic of the brightest and best of us all and speak to the future and sustainability of tourism in The Bahamas.”
Lyford Cay Foundations Executive Director Dr. Nicola Virgill-Rolle said, “Innovative leadership in tourism is key to the continued progress of The Bahamas. That’s why we are excited about awarding the Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board Award to undergraduate and graduate tourism leadership programmes. This scholarship, which is believed to be the first of its kind, is a historic partnership with Nassau Paradise Island Promotion Board. We fully recognise the importance of providing leaders in our most important economic engine with the tools that will help them make the best decisions whether in banner times or unforeseeable crisis. Access to higher education at competitive schools combined with access to internships and mentoring will prepare Bahamians for the top posts in the tourism and hospitality sectors.”
As the nation’s largest private funder of scholarships, The Lyford Cay Foundation has invested more than $50 million in Bahamian students and nonprofits since its founding in 1969. The promotion board’s partnership with the foundation marks the first time that the not-for-profit organization has specifically provided funding focused on tourism management, vision and leadership. NPIPB congratulates each recipient of the scholarship and hopes that the award will propel them into critical industry leadership positions that will impact the travel and tourism sector for years to come.
