We’re sharing our Nassau & Paradise Island museum guide to help you plan your trip.
Art & Culture
If you’re a first-time visitor to the island, a great place to start is with a visit to the Heritage Museum of The Bahamas. The museum takes you on a fascinating journey of exploration through the antique collection of Hamilton White. It includes rare artefacts, relics, and antiques that illustrate the evolution of Bahamian life and culture. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how history, colonisation, and diverse cultural influences have shaped The Bahamas into what it is today.
For art lovers, the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB) is a must-see. This premier cultural institution showcases the creative talents of Bahamian artists, both past and present. With rotating exhibitions featuring paintings, sculptures, photography, and mixed media, the NAGB highlights the dynamic, evolving nature of Bahamian artistry. Interactive workshops and hands-on activities let visitors create their own masterpieces, and children’s programming makes the Gallery a family-friendly destination that’s perfect for all ages.
For even more Bahamian art, be sure The Current Gallery and Art Center at Baha Mar is on your list of galleries to explore. Here, you’ll find a vast collection of contemporary art, the Fairwind Exhibition — which explores the ideologies, beliefs, and lifestyles that have shaped Bahamian culture through paintings, photography, sculpture, and artefacts — and one of the largest collections of Bahamian art in Nassau & Paradise Island. You can also explore the ECCHO Museum, an extension of The Current that stands for Expressive Collaborations and Creative House of Opportunities. From captivating tours to engaging workshops and talks, The Current is a platform that puts Bahamian art on the world stage and is a must for any art lover making their way to Nassau & Paradise Island.
If you want a more intimate cultural experience, Doongalik Studios Art Gallery is an artistic gem. Founded in the 1970s by the late Jackson Burnside III, architect, artist and cultural advocate, and his wife, Pam, the couple spent their lifetime promoting the country's artistic talent. Doongalik now showcases the work of dozens of local artists throughout the year, exhibiting everything from paintings and sculptures to ceramics and quilts.
History
Nassau & Paradise Island offers a wealth of experiences for history enthusiasts, where natural landmarks and museums bring the islands' past to life.
One of the most immersive ways to step back in time is by visiting Clifton Heritage Park, where the rich cultural heritage of The Bahamas is showcased in its natural landscape. The park highlights our region’s deep historical roots — as you explore its trails, you'll gain insight into The Bahamas’ journey from pre-Columbian civilisations through colonial times and beyond.
For a closer look at Nassau's colonial history, a tour of its historic forts is a must. Fort Charlotte, Fort Fincastle, and Fort Montagu stand as reminders of The Bahamas’ strategic importance in the 18th century. These well-preserved fortresses offer panoramic views and a glimpse into the military defences that protected the islands from invaders. Nearby, the iconic Queen's Staircase — a 66-step limestone staircase carved by formerly enslaved people in the late 1700s — pays tribute to Nassau’s past. This landmark, which leads to Fort Fincastle, is a symbol of resilience and offers a beautiful spot to reflect on Bahamian history.
Don’t miss the opportunity to explore examples of Colonial architecture like the Government House, a striking pink and white mansion that serves as the residence of the Governor-General. Visitors can tour the grounds and learn more about the country’s government and history. Nearby, Christ Church Cathedral, the oldest Anglican church in The Bahamas, is another must-see. With its grand Gothic architecture and intricate stained glass windows, the cathedral stands as a testament to Nassau’s colonial heritage and religious roots, offering a peaceful, historical escape in the heart of the city.
Kid-Friendly Museums
Nassau & Paradise Island is home to several kid-friendly museums that combine learning and education, making them perfect for a family adventure. At the Pirates of Nassau Museum, young explorers can step into the world of swashbuckling buccaneers, with interactive exhibits, life-sized pirate ships, and immersive displays that bring the Golden Age of Piracy to life. Little ones will love the thrilling tales of Nassau’s infamous pirate past while learning about the history that shaped the island.
Another fantastic stop is the Educulture Junkanoo Museum, where children can dive into the exciting history of Junkanoo. They’ll have the chance to make colourful masks, dance to Bahamian music, and maybe even meet a Junkanoo queen.
